Abstract

This paper focuses on the phrase, "theory of representation," and what it means or might mean for researchers on visible or, indeed, any kind of language. Hence, the absence of the definitive or indefinite article in the title: a theory of representation is not being offered, still less the theory of representation: only a few cautious, clarifying observations on the very idea of theory of representation, but without technical artifice or the detail of supporting argument they deserve.
