Come Work With Me!

graduation cap

Have you recently gotten your Ph.D. from a U.S. institution (or are about to) and want to do interesting work in visualization? Computing Innovation (CI) Fellows are a great way to get funding for a year or two of post-doctoral work, and I am looking to host one.

CI Fellows are a program funded by NSF and run by CRA and CCC. Fellowships are open to recent graduates of U.S. institutions, with U.S. citizens given priority (but non-citizens are eligible, too). You must have completed your Ph.D., or be about to, between May 1, 2009, and August 31, 2010. Pay is at the usual post-doc level ($75,000 per year plus benefits), and there is money for relocation and travel ($15,000). So overall, this is a great package with practically no strings attached.

If you want to work with me, head over to my mentor page for a quick description of topics I'm interested in. If your interests are in visualization but are not listed there (or you're not sure), talk to me.

I am interested in two broad areas: theory of information visualization and visualization for visual communication. The theory side is about some of the topics described in my recent Year of InfoVis Theory article, and obviously thinking that topic further. Communication is about how to get information across to people, so they're engaged and retain that information. Perhaps that involves lots of embellishments, or perhaps it involves storytelling, or perhaps something else entirely. There's only one way to find out.

We have a very active and very social group of about 20 students in the Charlotte Visualization Center (at UNC Charlotte), which is one of the largest concentrations of visualization faculty and students in the country. We also have some neat hardware (multi-touch table, CAVE with three dual-projector walls, etc.) and we do work on iPhones, if that's your thing.

Applications are due May 23, so don't wait: Talk to me!
